EV Charger Installer Newbury

Automobile industry experts estimate that in the UK over 10 million passenger and 1 million commercial EV’s (electric vehicles) will be sold over the next 15 years. So naturally there will be an increase in the demand for charging points and EV Charger installation in general. It’s widely reported that the public charging network is woefully inadequate still. So the need for a home charger is ever more important.

MP Walden Ltd are a qualified EV charger installer in Newbury, covering Newbury, Berkshire and the Home Counties.

The popularity of electric cars in the UK has shot up over the last few years. 2023 saw an enormous 145% increase in the sales of electric passenger car sales. That means there are an estimated 975,000 battery-electric vehicles on UK roads as of January 2024. And a further 590,000 plug-in hybrids. This is compared with just 3,500 in 2013.

This growth is only expected to accelerate as we prepare for the ban on new petrol and diesel vehicle sales in 2030*. In fact, by the end of 2023, projections estimate that Electric Vehicle sales will overtake diesel and mild hybrid sales.

To assist people with buying new electric cars, the government are providing grants to buy certain vehicles that meet specific criteria. The grants available in the UK in January 2024 are listed in our article “What Grants Are Available For Electric Vehicles?”

The Benefits of Electric Vehicles

Electric Charging Points

In order to keep all these new electric vehicles running the network of charging points will need to increase across the whole country. The government’s ‘Go Ultra Low’ campaign suggest that by 2027 half of the new cars will be electric vehicles. This would mean 1.3 million new electric vehicles each year requiring charging at:

  • Public Places – high street, car parks, retail parks, supermarkets, leisure facilities, motorway services etc
  • Work – offices, factories, warehouses, etc
  • Home – 25 million existing homes and new build properties

As of the end of December 2023, there were 53,906 public electric vehicle charging points throughout the UK. Only 5,628 of these are rapid chargers. Although this is a 45% rise on the year before, the UK’s charging network is still significantly smaller than it needs to be. Rapid acceleration of the existing network is needed to achieve a smooth transition to all electric vehicles when the 2035 ban hits. This inevitably increases the importance of owning your own home electric vehicle charger.

Like with purchasing new electric vehicles, the government (OZEV – Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) are offering grants to both residential and commercial users of electric vehicles. Again, there is certain criteria that must be met. MP Walden Electrical are an officially registered EV Charger Installer in Newbury, a must for grant acceptance. Electric Vehicle Charging Grants

As mentioned above, grants are available that can assist with the initial purchase cost of eligible plug-in vehicles. Some even cover the cost and installation costs of charge points. The following grants are currently available in the UK. Additional grants for electric vehicles purchased and used in Scotland are available, please ask for details. Recently the grants available have changed. As a result we’ve put together a guide of what grants are available as of 2024, you can read it here.

Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant

Flat owner-occupiers and people living in rented properties can benefit from significant savings on EV charging stations via the EV Chargepoint Grant. You need to have off-street parking to be eligible. The grant provides a 75% contribution – up to a maximum of £350 – off the cost of purchasing and installing a home charging point.

(This scheme replaced the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) on 1st April 2022. Grants are no longer open to homeowners (including people with mortgages)).

House owners who wanted to take advantage of the grant must have had their installations completed by 31 March 2022.

EV Chargepoint Grant for Landlords

A new scheme has also been introduced and is available to provide funding to install electric vehicle charge points as a landlord, social housing provider or property factor in their rental and leasehold properties. This scheme replaces the old Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS). For details on both these schemes see our Domestic Charge points page or give us a call.

Workplace Charging Scheme

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based scheme. It provides support towards the up-front costs of the purchase and installation of electric vehicle charge-points for eligible businesses, charities, small accommodation businesses and public sector organisations.

WCS provides a grant equal to 75% of the purchase and installation costs of a chargepoint, capped at a maximum of £350 for each socket up to a limit of 40 single or 20 double sockets per company. This remains unchanged as of 1st April 2022.
